Myosiinisäikeet, also known as myosin filaments, are protein structures crucial for muscle contraction. They are composed primarily of the protein myosin. Myosin is a motor protein, meaning it can convert chemical energy into mechanical work. In muscle cells, myosin filaments interact with actin filaments, another type of protein filament, to generate the force required for movement.

The structure of a myosin filament is a thick filament made up of hundreds of myosin molecules. Each myosin molecule has a head region that can bind to actin and a tail region that forms the filament backbone. The myosin heads extend outwards from the filament in a helical arrangement.

During muscle contraction, the myosin heads bind to actin filaments, forming cross-bridges. These heads then undergo a power stroke, pulling the actin filaments towards the center of the sarcomere, the basic contractile unit of muscle. This sliding of actin filaments past myosin filaments shortens the muscle and produces force. The cycle of binding, power stroke, and detachment is repeated, allowing for sustained contraction.

Myosiinisäikeet are essential for all forms of muscle movement, from voluntary actions like walking and lifting to involuntary processes such as the beating of the heart. Their interaction with actin is a fundamental mechanism of biomechanics.
