The mylohyoid artery is a branch of the inferior alveolar artery, which itself is a terminal branch of the maxillary artery. This artery originates from the inferior alveolar artery just before it enters the mandibular foramen. The mylohyoid artery typically arises from the medial side of the inferior alveolar artery.

After its origin, the mylohyoid artery passes through the mylohyoid groove on the inner surface of the mandible, along with the mylohyoid nerve. It then emerges from the posterior aspect of the mylohyoid groove and courses anteriorly and inferiorly.

The mylohyoid artery supplies the mylohyoid muscle, which forms the floor of the mouth, and also provides branches to the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. It may also contribute to the blood supply of the submandibular gland and the skin and mucous membrane of the chin. In some anatomical variations, the mylohyoid artery may originate directly from the maxillary artery or the inferior alveolar artery may be absent, with the mylohyoid artery taking its place. Its anatomical course and branching pattern can vary between individuals.
