Myelinvaipan is a term of Finnish origin that translates to "myelin sheath" in English. It refers to the insulating layer that surrounds nerve fibers, called axons, in the nervous system. This sheath is primarily composed of a fatty substance called myelin, which is produced by specialized glial cells. In the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), these cells are oligodendrocytes, while in the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord), they are Schwann cells.

The myelin sheath is not continuous along the axon but is segmented, with small gaps called nodes of Ranvier. This segmented structure is crucial for efficient nerve impulse transmission. The myelin acts as an electrical insulator, preventing the leakage of electrical signals. This allows the nerve impulse to "jump" from one node of Ranvier to the next, a process known as saltatory conduction. This mechanism significantly speeds up the conduction velocity of nerve impulses, enabling rapid communication between different parts of the body.

Damage or loss of the myelin sheath, a condition known as demyelination, can severely impair nerve function. This can lead to a variety of neurological symptoms depending on the location and extent of the damage. Diseases like multiple sclerosis are characterized by demyelination in the central nervous system.
