mvaregistrert

mvaregistrert, or merverdiavgiftsregistrert, is the status of a business or organization that is registered for value-added tax (VAT) in Norway. A VAT-registered entity charges VAT on taxable goods and services and is entitled to reclaim the VAT it incurs on purchases, subject to rules set by the tax authority.

In Norway, registration is required for businesses with taxable turnover above a threshold within a 12-month period. The threshold historically stands at 50,000 NOK, after which a company must register for VAT with Skatteetaten (the Norwegian Tax Administration). Once registered, the business receives a VAT number and must apply VAT to eligible sales.

Being mvaregistrert entails invoicing with VAT and reporting. Businesses must account for output VAT on sales and may deduct input VAT on purchases. VAT returns are filed regularly (monthly, quarterly, or annually) and any VAT due must be paid by set deadlines.

VAT rates in Norway vary by goods and services. The standard rate is the majority of goods and services; reduced rates apply to certain items. A VAT-registered business must issue VAT-compliant invoices that include the VAT number and the amount of VAT charged.

Registration process: Most businesses register online through the Altinn portal with Skatteetaten. You'll need company information, ownership, and expected turnover. If turnover falls below the threshold, registration may not be required, and deregistration can be pursued if previously registered.
