Multivesikulaarinen refers to a cellular structure characterized by the presence of multiple vesicles. In biology, vesicles are small, membrane-bound sacs within a cell that can transport materials or store them. A multivesikulaarinen body, or multivesicular body (MVB), is a specific type of endosomal vesicle that contains a collection of intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) within its lumen. These MVBs play a crucial role in intracellular trafficking and degradation pathways.

The formation of MVBs begins with the inward budding of the endosomal membrane, enclosing small vesicles within the larger endosome. This process is tightly regulated and involves various proteins, such as ESCRT (Endosomal Sorting Complexes Required for Transport) proteins, which are essential for the scission and budding of ILVs. Once formed, MVBs can follow several cellular fates. They can fuse with lysosomes, delivering their cargo, including the ILVs, for degradation. Alternatively, in some cell types, MVBs can fuse with the plasma membrane and release their ILVs into the extracellular space, a process known as exosome release.

Multivesikulaarinen bodies are implicated in a wide range of cellular functions, including protein sorting, signal transduction, and the removal of cellular debris. Their role in exosome release is particularly significant, as exosomes are involved in intercellular communication, carrying proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids between cells. Dysregulation of MVB formation and function has been linked to various diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, highlighting their importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis.
