Fox William Mulder is a fictional character in The X-Files, an American science fiction drama series created by Chris Carter. He is an FBI special agent assigned to the X-Files, a division dedicated to investigating unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. The role is portrayed by actor David Duchovny.

Mulder is depicted as a principled believer in the existence of extraterrestrial life and in government conspiracies, motivated in large part by the disappearance of his sister Samantha in 1979. He often pursues unconventional evidence and places trust in witnesses and experiences that contradict official explanations. He forms a long-running professional partnership with Dana Scully, a medical doctor and skeptic, whose skepticism counterbalances his convictions.

Throughout the series, Mulder's investigations bring him into conflict with higher authorities and exposure to cover-ups. He leads and champions the X-Files case files, and his quest for truth drives much of the show's narrative. The character appears across the original run (1993–2002) and is revisited in later revivals, as well as in the feature films The X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008).

Mulder's portrayal is widely cited as central to The X-Files' popularity, and the character remains a prominent figure in television science fiction, noted for his persistent belief in the extraordinary and his complex relationship with Scully.
