A motor starter is a device or assembly that enables an electric motor to be started, stopped, and protected while under control. Most modern starters combine a contactor with an overload relay, and may include fuses, circuit breakers, interlocks, and control devices such as pushbuttons or indicator lights.

A typical starter includes a contactor for switching and an overload relay for motor protection. The control circuit, with pushbuttons or switches, activates the coil of the contactor. Auxiliary contacts can provide signaling or interlock, while fuses or circuit breakers protect the circuit and a suitable enclosure guards the components.

Types range from direct-on-line starters that energize the motor directly, to reduced-voltage starters (autotransformer, primary-resistance, or star-delta) that limit starting current. Soft starters and variable-frequency drives offer ramping and speed control. Manual motor starters provide simple, hand-operated control.

Operation involves energizing the control circuit to pull in the contactor and apply line power to the motor. The overload relay trips if current or temperature exceed its setting, opening the circuit to protect the motor. Coordination with protection devices and proper safeguarding are essential.

Motor starters are used in a wide range of equipment, including pumps, conveyors, fans, and compressors. Selection depends on motor size and voltage, desired starting torque and current, protection coordination, environmental conditions, and compliance with applicable electrical standards.
