Motiliteetti, or motility in English, is the capacity of organisms or cells to move. In biology, motiliteetti encompasses both locomotion of whole organisms and the movement of individual cells, driven by energy-dependent processes. It is distinct from passive transport, which occurs without active energy expenditure.

Motiliteetin mekanismit arise from the cell’s cytoskeleton and associated motor proteins. In eukaryotes, actin filaments and myosin generate protrusions and contractions that enable crawling, while flagella and cilia use dynein motors to produce whip-like beating. Prokaryotic motiliteetti typically relies on rotating flagella powered by ion gradients, enabling directed movement through fluids.

Motiliteetti voidaan mitata useilla tavoilla. Key metrics include speed, directionality, persistence, and the ability to respond to stimuli (chemotaxis, phototaxis). Common methods involve live-cell imaging and particle tracking, as well as functional assays such as wound-healing assays and chemotaxis tests. In health contexts, impaired motiliteetti is linked to infertility, gastrointestinal disorders, and cancer metastasis, while in ecology it influences dispersal and predator–prey interactions.
