A monohull is a type of watercraft that uses a single hull. This is in contrast to multihulls, which employ two or more hulls, such as catamarans and trimarans. The monohull design is the oldest and most common type of hull construction for boats and ships.

Monohulls are characterized by their single, enclosed body that provides buoyancy and stability. They typically rely on ballast, often in the form of a heavy keel, to counteract the heeling forces generated by wind and waves, keeping the vessel upright. This ballast also contributes to a lower center of gravity, enhancing stability.

Advantages of monohulls include their simpler construction and often lower cost compared to multihulls. They tend to have a more traditional feel and can offer a more comfortable ride in certain sea conditions, particularly when sailing upwind. However, they can also experience significant heeling (leaning) when under sail, which can reduce performance and deck space. They may also have a deeper draft than comparable multihulls, limiting access to shallow waters.

Despite the rise of multihull designs, monohulls remain the dominant configuration for a vast array of vessels, from small recreational sailboats and powerboats to large commercial ships and naval vessels. Their adaptability and proven track record ensure their continued prevalence in maritime applications.
