Ganden Monastery is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It is located at the top of Tushita Hill, about 25 kilometers northeast of Lhasa. Founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, Ganden was a center of religious and political power for centuries. The monastery's name, Ganden, is a Tibetan translation of the Sanskrit word Tushita, a heaven realm where the future Buddha Maitreya resides.
