Molting, also known as ecdysis, is the process by which an animal sheds its exoskeleton or external covering. This is a common phenomenon in many invertebrate groups, including arthropods like insects, crustaceans, and arachnids, as well as some other animals such as mollusks. The shedding of the old exoskeleton allows the animal to grow, as the exoskeleton itself is rigid and does not expand.

The process of molting typically involves several stages. First, a new exoskeleton begins to form underneath the old one. Once the new exoskeleton is ready, the animal will increase its blood pressure or ingest air or water to break the old shell. It then painstakingly extracts itself from the old exoskeleton. The newly molted exoskeleton is soft and vulnerable until it hardens, a process that can take some time. During this period, the animal is often inactive and seeks shelter to avoid predators.

The frequency of molting varies greatly depending on the species, its age, and environmental conditions such as temperature and food availability. Juvenile animals typically molt more frequently than adults, as they are undergoing rapid growth. Hormones play a crucial role in regulating the molting cycle. Disruptions to this cycle can have serious consequences for the animal's survival. Molting is a critical, albeit vulnerable, stage in the life of many animals.
