mjini

Mjini is a coastal town and district in East Africa. It is situated along a natural harbor on the Indian Ocean, within a low-lying coastal plain. The area experiences a tropical savanna climate with a long wet season from March to May and a dry season from June to October; average temperatures hover around 25–28°C.

Founded in the 17th or 18th century as a trading settlement by Swahili-speaking merchants, Mjini developed around fishing and salt production. It gained administrative district status in the 20th century and has since expanded its services sector.

Population around 40,000; predominantly Swahili-speaking; Islam and Christianity are the major religions; a small minority adheres to other faiths.

Economy relies on small-scale fishing, agriculture (ginger, citrus, cassava), and growing tourism. Port facilities support fishing fleets and occasional passenger ferries; road connections link to regional centers; a regional hospital and a campus of the national university provide education.

Cultural life includes markets, craftwork, seafood cuisine, and an annual maritime festival.
