Miyelinli refers to the presence of myelin, a fatty insulating sheath that surrounds nerve fibers, also known as axons. This myelin sheath is produced by glial cells in the nervous system. In the central nervous system, oligodendrocytes form the myelin, while in the peripheral nervous system, Schwann cells are responsible. The myelin sheath is not continuous; it is interrupted at regular intervals by gaps called nodes of Ranvier. This segmented structure is crucial for the efficient transmission of nerve impulses.

The primary function of myelin is to increase the speed at which electrical signals, or action potentials, travel along the axon. This is achieved through a process called saltatory conduction, where the impulse "jumps" from one node of Ranvier to the next, rather than propagating continuously along the entire length of the axon. This significantly speeds up neural communication, allowing for rapid responses and complex cognitive functions.

Conditions affecting myelin, known as demyelinating diseases, can have severe neurological consequences. In these disorders, the myelin sheath is damaged or destroyed, impairing or blocking nerve signal transmission. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a well-known example of a demyelinating disease, where the immune system attacks the myelin in the central nervous system. Other examples include Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects the peripheral nervous system. The presence or absence of myelin is a fundamental aspect of nervous system structure and function.
