Mitochondriální refers to anything related to mitochondria, which are often called the "powerhouses" of the cell. These are organelles found in eukaryotic cells, meaning cells that have a nucleus. Their primary function is to generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. This process is known as cellular respiration. Mitochondria have a double membrane structure. The inner membrane is folded into cristae, which increase the surface area for the biochemical reactions that produce ATP. They contain their own DNA, separate from the cell's nuclear DNA, which is inherited maternally. This mitochondrial DNA encodes for some of the proteins essential for mitochondrial function, while others are encoded by the nuclear genome and imported into the mitochondria. Dysfunctions in mitochondria, or mitochondrial diseases, can affect various organs and systems in the body, as energy production is crucial for all cellular processes. These diseases can stem from mutations in mitochondrial DNA or nuclear DNA that encodes mitochondrial proteins.
