Mineralokortykoidowy is a Polish term referring to mineralocorticoids, a group of steroid hormones produced by the adrenal cortex. These hormones are primarily involved in regulating the balance of electrolytes and water in the body. The most well-known and potent mineralocorticoid is aldosterone.

Mineralocorticoids exert their effects mainly on the kidneys. They act on the distal tubules and collecting ducts, promoting the reabsorption of sodium and water back into the bloodstream, while simultaneously increasing the excretion of potassium and hydrogen ions into the urine. This action is crucial for maintaining blood pressure, blood volume, and electrolyte homeostasis.

The production and release of mineralocorticoids, particularly aldosterone, are tightly regulated by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). When blood pressure or blood volume drops, the kidneys release renin, initiating a cascade that ultimately leads to aldosterone secretion. Other factors influencing mineralocorticoid activity include the concentration of potassium in the blood and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the pituitary gland, although its role is less significant for aldosterone compared to glucocorticoids.

Disorders related to mineralocorticoid function can have significant health consequences. Conditions like hyperaldosteronism (excessive aldosterone production) can lead to hypertension, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis. Conversely, hypoaldosteronism (insufficient aldosterone production) can result in hypotension, hyperkalemia, and dehydration. Synthetic mineralocorticoids, such as fludrocortisone, are used clinically to treat conditions characterized by mineralocorticoid deficiency.
