Mikroszennyezdések, sometimes referred to as microcontaminants or trace organic pollutants, are chemicals found in minute quantities in the environment, particularly in water bodies. These substances, even at very low concentrations, can have significant adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and potentially human health. They encompass a wide range of compounds, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and hormones.

The presence of mikroszennyezdések in the environment is largely due to human activities. Wastewater treatment plants, while effective at removing many pollutants, are often not designed to completely eliminate these complex and diverse chemical compounds. Consequently, treated wastewater discharged into rivers and lakes can carry these mikroszennyezdések. Agricultural runoff, industrial discharge, and improper disposal of medications also contribute to their widespread distribution.

Once in the aquatic environment, mikroszennyezdések can persist for extended periods, bioaccumulate in organisms, and biomagnify up the food chain. Their effects can be subtle and long-term, impacting the reproductive systems, endocrine functions, and overall health of aquatic life. Research is ongoing to fully understand the chronic effects of low-level exposure on various species and to develop effective strategies for their removal and prevention.
