Mesenchymal is a term used in biology and medicine to describe a type of embryonic tissue and also a type of adult stem cell. Embryonic mesenchyme is a loosely organized tissue composed of mesenchymal cells, which are often stellate or spindle-shaped with extensive cytoplasmic processes. This tissue is critical for development as it gives rise to a variety of connective tissues, including bone, cartilage, muscle, and blood. Mesenchymal cells are highly migratory and invasive, playing a key role in morphogenetic processes during embryonic development.

In adult organisms, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), also known as medicinal signaling cells, are multipotent stromal cells found in various tissues, including bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord. These cells share some characteristics with embryonic mesenchyme, notably their ability to differentiate into multiple cell types of the mesenchymal lineage, such as osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), chondrocytes (cartilage-forming cells), and adipocytes (fat-forming cells). MSCs are of significant interest for regenerative medicine due to their therapeutic potential in treating various diseases and injuries through tissue repair and immunomodulation.
