Metriikkayksiköitä, or metric units, are a decimalized system of measurement based on the metre as the unit of length, the kilogram as the unit of mass, and the second as the unit of time. The system is widely used in science, engineering, and commerce worldwide. It was developed in France during the French Revolution to replace the complex and varied systems of measurement then in use.

The International System of Units, or SI, is the modern form of the metric system. It is maintained by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in France. The SI system includes units for measuring length, mass, time, electric current, temperature, amount of substance, and luminous intensity. Each unit is defined by a fundamental constant, such as the speed of light for the metre or the Planck constant for the kilogram.

The metric system is known for its simplicity and ease of use. It is based on powers of ten, with prefixes such as milli-, kilo-, and mega- used to denote fractions and multiples of the base unit. For example, a millimetre is one-thousandth of a metre, while a kilometre is one-thousand metres. This consistency makes the metric system ideal for scientific and technical applications.

The adoption of the metric system has been gradual and uneven. While many countries have fully transitioned to the metric system, others still use a mix of metric and imperial units. However, the metric system's advantages in precision and ease of use have led to its widespread acceptance in international trade and scientific research.
