Metathesisreaktio, often shortened to metathesis, is a chemical reaction in which the atoms or groups of atoms in two reacting compounds switch places, forming two new compounds. This type of reaction is also sometimes referred to as a double displacement or double replacement reaction. The general form of a metathesis reaction can be represented as AB + CD → AD + CB, where A and C are cations, and B and D are anions.

Metathesis reactions are typically driven by the formation of a product that is removed from the reaction mixture. This removal can occur in several ways: the formation of an insoluble precipitate, the formation of a gas that escapes, or the formation of a weakly ionized substance such as water. For instance, when aqueous solutions of silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are mixed, a precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl) forms because it is insoluble in water. The reaction is AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq).

Another common example involves the formation of a gas. If hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), carbon dioxide gas is produced, along with water and sodium chloride. The reaction is 2HCl(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) → 2NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g). Acid-base neutralization reactions, where an acid and a base react to form a salt and water, are also considered a type of metathesis reaction due to the formation of the weakly ionized water molecule. These reactions are fundamental in inorganic chemistry and are widely used in qualitative analysis and synthesis.
