Metamorfissa is a term used in geology to describe the process of metamorphism, which is the transformation of pre-existing rock types into new types of rocks, called metamorphic rocks. This transformation occurs without the rock melting or fully dissolving. Instead, the original rock, known as the protolith, undergoes changes in mineralogy, texture, and sometimes chemical composition due to variations in temperature, pressure, and the presence of chemically active fluids. These conditions are typically found deep within the Earth's crust or where tectonic plates interact.

The minerals within the protolith recrystallize, grow larger, or change into new mineral assemblages that are stable under the new metamorphic conditions. Textural changes can include the alignment of minerals, creating foliation, or a granular texture where minerals are randomly oriented. Common types of metamorphism include contact metamorphism, which occurs when rocks are exposed to the heat of an igneous intrusion, and regional metamorphism, which happens over large areas, often associated with mountain building.
