Merkittävyystasona, often translated as "level of significance" or "significance level," is a concept used in statistical hypothesis testing. It represents the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is actually true. This is also known as a Type I error.

The significance level is typically denoted by the Greek letter alpha ($\alpha$). Common values for $\alpha$ are 0.05 (5%), 0.01 (1%), and 0.10 (10%). A lower significance level indicates a more stringent requirement for rejecting the null hypothesis, meaning that stronger evidence is needed to conclude that the observed effect is not due to random chance.

When conducting a hypothesis test, a p-value is calculated.
