Membránfehérjékben refers to proteins found within biological membranes. These proteins are crucial for a wide variety of cellular functions, acting as the gatekeepers and communicators of the cell. They are embedded in the lipid bilayer that forms the cell membrane, playing roles in transport, signaling, and cell adhesion.

There are several types of membrane proteins. Integral membrane proteins are tightly associated with the lipid bilayer and often span the entire membrane, serving as channels or transporters for specific molecules. Peripheral membrane proteins, on the other hand, are more loosely bound to the membrane surface, interacting with integral proteins or the polar heads of lipids. Lipid-anchored proteins are also a category, covalently attached to a lipid molecule that is inserted into the bilayer.

The structure of membrane proteins is intricately linked to their function. They possess hydrophobic regions that interact with the fatty acid tails of the lipids in the membrane's interior, and hydrophilic regions that are exposed to the aqueous environments on either side of the membrane. This amphipathic nature allows them to integrate seamlessly into the membrane.

The diverse functions of membrane proteins include facilitating the passage of ions and molecules across the membrane (transport), receiving external signals and relaying them into the cell (receptors), and mediating interactions between cells or between a cell and its extracellular matrix (adhesion). Their malfunction can lead to various diseases, highlighting their indispensable role in cellular health.
