The interwar period, or mellomkrigsperiode in Norwegian, refers to the time between the end of World War I in 1918 and the beginning of World War II in 1939. This era was marked by significant political, economic, and social upheaval across the globe.

Economically, the period began with widespread disruption and the lingering effects of wartime debt and reparations. The Roaring Twenties saw a period of apparent prosperity and cultural flourishing in many Western countries, characterized by jazz music, new technologies, and changing social norms. However, this boom was followed by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, leading to the Great Depression, a severe global economic downturn that caused mass unemployment and hardship.

Politically, the interwar years witnessed the rise of new ideologies and the redrawing of national boundaries. The collapse of empires like the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian empires led to the formation of new nation-states.
