Mediolanum, also known as Mediolla, was an ancient Celtic settlement that grew into a significant Roman city. Its strategic location in the Po Valley of northern Italy made it an important center for trade and military operations. The Insubres, a Celtic tribe, are believed to have founded the settlement. In 222 BCE, the Romans conquered the area, and Mediolanum soon became a flourishing Roman municipality.

Under Roman rule, Mediolanum experienced considerable growth and development. It served as a key administrative and economic hub, benefiting from its position on important Roman roads. The city's importance was further elevated when Emperor Diocletian made it the seat of the Western Roman Empire in 286 CE. This period saw the construction of impressive public buildings, including basilicas, baths, and an amphitheater. Mediolanum also became a prominent center of early Christianity, with Saint Ambrose serving as its bishop in the late 4th century.

The city's prominence continued into the early medieval period, though it faced challenges from barbarian invasions and shifting political powers. Despite these upheavals, Mediolanum, which eventually evolved into modern Milan, retained its status as a major urban center. Its rich history is a testament to its enduring significance throughout various historical epochs, from its Celtic origins to its imperial Roman glory and beyond.
