The digestive tract, also known as the alimentary canal or gastrointestinal tract, is a complex system responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste products from the body. It begins at the mouth and extends through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.

In the mouth, food is mechanically broken down by chewing and chemically digested by enzymes in saliva. The esophagus then transports the food to the stomach, where it is mixed with gastric juices, further breaking it down into a semi-liquid substance called chyme.

The chyme then moves into the small intestine, where most of the nutrient absorption occurs. Here, enzymes from the pancreas and liver further aid in digestion, and the intestinal walls absorb essential vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into the bloodstream.

The remaining undigested material passes into the large intestine, where water is absorbed, and waste products are formed into feces. Finally, feces are stored in the rectum and eliminated from the body through the anus during defecation. The digestive tract is a vital system for sustaining life, ensuring the body receives the necessary nourishment to function properly.
