Material Resource Planning, often abbreviated as MRP, is a production planning and inventory management system used by manufacturers to manage the production process and ensure that the right materials are available at the right time. It is a key component of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and is designed to optimize the use of resources, reduce costs, and improve efficiency.

MRP systems work by calculating the net requirements for materials based on the master production schedule, which outlines the planned production quantities and dates. The system then determines the gross requirements by adding the on-hand inventory and planned receipts to the net requirements. It calculates the planned order releases by subtracting the gross requirements from the on-hand inventory and planned receipts.

One of the main advantages of MRP is its ability to forecast future demand and plan production accordingly. This helps manufacturers to avoid stockouts and overstocking, which can both lead to increased costs. MRP also allows for better coordination between different departments, such as production, procurement, and sales, by providing a centralized system for managing inventory and production.

However, MRP also has its limitations. It is primarily focused on the production process and may not be suitable for companies that have a more complex supply chain or require more advanced planning capabilities. Additionally, MRP systems can be complex and time-consuming to set up and maintain, which can be a barrier for smaller companies.

In recent years, there has been a shift towards more advanced planning systems, such as Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) and Supply Chain Planning (SCP), which build upon the principles of MRP but offer more functionality and flexibility. These systems are designed to address the limitations of MRP and provide a more comprehensive solution for managing the entire supply chain.
