Production and sources: Magnesium salts are obtained from mineral sources such as dolomite and magnesite, as well as from seawater and natural brines. Processes include mining, lime or acid treatment, crystallization, and evaporation to concentrate the desired salt. Magnesium chloride can be produced from brines via electrolysis; magnesium sulfate from brines or salt lakes; magnesium nitrate from nitric acid reactions.

Applications: In agriculture, magnesium salts supply magnesium, an essential plant nutrient needed for chlorophyll synthesis. Magnesium sulfate is used as a fertilizer and as a dietary supplement. In medicine, magnesium salts are used as laxatives (such as magnesium sulfate and magnesium hydroxide) and antacids. In industry, magnesium hydroxide serves as a flame retardant and magnesium compounds are used in water treatment and as refractory materials; magnesium chloride is used for de-icing and dust control.

Safety and environmental aspects: Magnesium salts are usually handled with standard chemical safety precautions. Excessive intake can cause diarrhea or electrolyte imbalance. Some salts can interact with medications, and environmental release should be managed to avoid salinity changes in aquatic systems.
