Magmatoogenesis is the geological process by which magma is formed. Magma is molten or semi-molten rock found beneath the Earth's surface. The primary mechanisms responsible for generating magma are changes in temperature, pressure, and the addition of volatile substances, particularly water.

Increased temperature is a straightforward way to melt rock. This can occur through the upwelling of hotter mantle material, radioactive decay within the Earth's crust and mantle, or the intrusion of already hot magma. However, rock melting is not solely dependent on temperature. Pressure also plays a crucial role. In the upper mantle, rocks are under immense pressure. If this pressure is reduced, such as during decompression melting beneath mid-ocean ridges or mantle plumes, the melting point of the rock is lowered, allowing it to melt even without a significant increase in temperature.

The addition of volatile substances, especially water, significantly lowers the melting point of rocks. This process is known as flux melting. Water can be introduced into the mantle through the subduction of oceanic plates. As the subducting plate descends, it carries water-rich sediments and minerals. At depth, these volatiles are released and rise into the overlying mantle wedge, causing it to melt and generate magma that can then ascend to the surface. Magmatic processes are fundamental to many geological phenomena, including volcanic activity and the formation of igneous rocks.
