mõõtude

Mõõtude is a genitive plural form of mõõt, a word in Estonian that refers to a measurement, a dimension, or a quantity used to describe something. In everyday language, inimesed often use mõõtmed to talk about the physical size of an object, such as its length, width, and height. The form mõõtude appears when the phrase requires the genitive, for example in expressions like mõõtude süsteem (system of measures) or mõõtude täpsus (accuracy of measurements).

Mõõtmed can denote both spatial dimensions and numerical quantities. In geometry and engineering, they describe the extents of objects (pikkus, laius, kõrgus, sügavus). In science and mathematics, mõõt also refers to a measurable quantity to which a unit is assigned, such as temperatuur, mass or aeg. The corresponding concept of a unit of measurement is mõõtühik.

In metrology, measuring systems and standards are central. The Estonian measurement framework typically aligns with the SI (Suurimaks rahvusvaheline süsteem) base units, for example meeter for length, kilogramm for mass, sekund for time. Mõõtude kohta produced data are reported with units and an indication of precision or uncertainty, for instance pikkus 2,50 meetrit ± 0,01 meetrit.

The term also appears in technical and industrial contexts, where phrases like mõõtude jaotus or erinevate mõõtude kasutamine describe the distribution or use of various measurements.
