Lümfotsüütideks are a type of white blood cell that play a crucial role in the immune system. They are a key component of the adaptive immune response, which allows the body to recognize and remember specific pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria, and mount a targeted defense. There are three main types of lymphocytes: B cells, T cells, and natural killer (NK) cells.

B cells are responsible for producing antibodies, which are proteins that bind to specific antigens on the surface of pathogens, marking them for destruction by other immune cells. T cells have several functions. Helper T cells assist B cells in antibody production and activate other immune cells. Cytotoxic T cells directly kill infected cells or cancerous cells. Regulatory T cells help to suppress the immune response, preventing it from attacking the body's own tissues. NK cells are part of the innate immune system and can recognize and kill infected or cancerous cells without prior sensitization.

Lymphocytes are produced in the bone marrow and mature in different lymphoid organs. B cells mature in the bone marrow, while T cells migrate to the thymus for maturation. Lymphocytes circulate throughout the body in the blood and lymph, patrolling for signs of infection or disease. Their presence and function are essential for maintaining health and fighting off illness. An abnormal number of lymphocytes can indicate various health conditions, including infections, autoimmune diseases, or certain types of cancer.
