Lämpöyksikköinä, or thermal units, are standard measures used to quantify heat energy. The most common thermal unit is the joule (J), which is the SI unit for energy. One joule represents the energy transferred when a force of one newton is applied over a distance of one meter.

Historically, other units have been used to measure heat. The calorie (cal) is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. A kilocalorie (kcal), also known as a food calorie, is equal to 1000 calories. The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is another common unit, defined as the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Conversions between these units exist. For example, one calorie is approximately equal to 4.184 joules, and one BTU is roughly 1055 joules. In scientific and engineering contexts, the joule is the preferred unit due to its consistency within the International System of Units. However, calories and BTUs remain in common use, particularly in fields like nutrition and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Understanding these different thermal units is crucial for comprehending energy transfer and thermodynamic processes.
