Thermal spraying, known as lämpösuihkutus in Finnish, is a group of coating processes in which molten or semi-molten materials are sprayed onto a surface. The heated material is projected by a spray gun onto the substrate, where it adheres and solidifies, forming a protective or functional coating. This technique is widely used across various industries for applications such as corrosion protection, wear resistance, thermal barriers, and electrical insulation.

The thermal spraying process involves several key steps. First, a feedstock material, which can be in the form of powder, wire, or rod, is heated to its melting or softening point. Common heating methods include combustion flames (using fuels like acetylene, propane, or hydrogen), electric arcs, or plasma. Once the material is molten, it is propelled towards the substrate by a gas stream or the force of the spray gun. Upon impact, the molten droplets flatten and rapidly cool, forming a cohesive coating layer by layer.

Various types of thermal spraying exist, each offering different advantages and suited for specific applications. These include flame spraying, arc spraying, plasma spraying, and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying. The choice of process depends on factors such as the coating material, substrate, desired coating properties, and economic considerations. The resulting coatings can significantly enhance the performance and lifespan of components exposed to demanding environments.
