Lymphangiogenic refers to anything related to lymphangiogenesis. Lymphangiogenesis is the process by which new lymphatic vessels are formed from pre-existing ones. This is a vital physiological process that occurs throughout life, playing a crucial role in tissue fluid balance, immune surveillance, and the transport of fats. It is distinct from vasculogenesis and angiogenesis, which are the formation of blood vessels.

The formation of lymphatic vessels is a complex biological event regulated by various signaling pathways and molecular factors. Vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) and its receptor VEGFR-3 are considered key mediators in lymphangiogenesis. They promote the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of lymphatic endothelial cells.

Under normal physiological conditions, lymphangiogenesis is essential for maintaining homeostasis. However, aberrant lymphangiogenesis can contribute to pathological conditions. For instance, it is implicated in the spread of cancer cells (metastasis) through the lymphatic system. Conversely, impaired lymphangiogenesis can lead to lymphedema, a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in tissues due to inadequate lymphatic drainage. Research into the mechanisms of lymphangiogenesis is ongoing, with the aim of developing therapeutic strategies for diseases involving lymphatic vessel dysfunction.
