Lymfkappillärerna are microscopic, blind-ended vessels that are a fundamental part of the lymphatic system. They are found in most tissues of the body, interspersed among blood capillaries. Their primary function is to collect excess fluid, proteins, and other substances that leak out of blood capillaries into the interstitial space. This fluid, known as lymph, is crucial for maintaining tissue fluid balance and transporting immune cells.

The structure of lymph capillaries is unique, allowing for efficient uptake of interstitial fluid. Their walls are composed of a single layer of endothelial cells that overlap loosely. These overlapping cells act like one-way valves, opening to allow lymph to enter the capillary when interstitial fluid pressure increases, but closing to prevent backflow. Unlike blood capillaries, lymph capillaries lack a continuous basement membrane, which further facilitates the entry of larger molecules.

Once inside the lymph capillary, the fluid becomes lymph. The lymph then travels through progressively larger lymphatic vessels, eventually draining into the bloodstream. This process is vital for removing waste products, combating infections by transporting lymphocytes, and absorbing fats from the digestive system. The presence and function of lymph capillaries are essential for overall health and immune surveillance.
