Both procedures are usually done under local anesthesia.

Bone marrow samples are analyzed in laboratories to assess the health and function of blood-forming cells. Physicians order bone marrow examinations to diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions. These include anemias, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other blood disorders. The analysis can reveal abnormalities in the number, size, or appearance of blood cells, as well as the presence of abnormal cells or diseases like cancer.
