Lungbildning is a Swedish term that translates to "lung formation" or "lung development" in English. It refers to the complex biological process by which the lungs of a developing organism are formed. This process begins early in embryonic development and continues throughout gestation and even into early postnatal life.

The formation of the lungs involves a series of intricate steps, including the budding of the respiratory tract from the primitive foregut, followed by branching morphogenesis, where the initial airway tube repeatedly divides to form the bronchial tree. Simultaneously, the surrounding mesenchyme differentiates and contributes to the development of blood vessels, cartilage, and connective tissues within the lung. Specialized cells also emerge, such as alveolar epithelial cells that will eventually form the gas-exchanging surfaces.

Errors or disruptions during lungbildning can lead to congenital lung abnormalities, such as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, pulmonary agenesis (complete absence of a lung), or hypoplasia (underdevelopment of lung tissue). The health and proper formation of the lungs are critical for survival, as they are responsible for respiration, the vital process of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide elimination. Understanding lungbildning is crucial for studying respiratory diseases and developing treatments for congenital lung conditions.
