loetu

Loetu is a fictional language family used in worldbuilding and speculative linguistics, encompassing several related languages spoken by the imagined Loetu people of the Loetu Archipelago in the central sea.

Etymology and scope: The name Loetu derives from the autonym of the core community, often glossed as “speech of the sea” in the constructed language. The family is described as containing three primary branches: Northern Loetu, Central Loetu, and Southern Loetu.

Linguistic features: Core traits include agglutinative morphology, subject–object–verb (SOV) word order, extensive noun incorporation, and noun classifiers; phonology with a five-vowel system, voiceless unaspirated stops, and a limited set of clitics.

Writing and literacy: Loetu uses a syllabary called the Lote script, derived from shortened signs. Literacy programs exist in educational contexts, and loanwords from neighboring languages appear in modern varieties.

History and status: The fictional origin myth places Loetu within a seafaring culture with complex trade networks that facilitated lexical exchange.
