Ljusbrytningskoefficienten, often abbreviated as LBC, is a term used in optics and physics to describe the phenomenon of light refraction. It is a measure of how much the path of light bends when it passes from one medium to another. This bending occurs because the speed of light changes as it moves through different substances. The greater the change in speed, the more pronounced the bending.

The ljusbrytningskoefficienten is directly related to the refractive index of the materials involved. The refractive index, typically denoted by 'n', is a dimensionless number that represents the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a given medium. When light travels from a medium with a lower refractive index to one with a higher refractive index, it bends towards the normal (an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface). Conversely, when light moves from a higher to a lower refractive index medium, it bends away from the normal.
