Defects in lysosomal enzymes can lead to a group of genetic disorders known as lysosomal storage diseases. In these conditions, specific undigested materials accumulate within the cell, leading to cellular dysfunction and various symptoms depending on the affected tissue. Examples include Tay-Sachs disease and Gaucher disease. The study of lysosomes is vital for understanding cellular health, disease, and potential therapeutic interventions.
