Litosfäärissä is a Finnish term that translates to "in the lithosphere" in English. The lithosphere itself is the rigid, outermost shell of a terrestrial-type planet or natural satellite. It is composed of all the crust and the portion of the upper mantle that behaves elastically on time scales of thousands of years or greater. The lithosphere is broken up into tectonic plates that move slowly over the underlying asthenosphere, which is a mechanically weak and ductile region of the upper mantle.

The lithosphere's thickness varies, typically ranging from about 10 to 200 kilometers. Oceanic lithosphere is generally thinner than continental lithosphere. This layer is where geological processes like plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanism occur. The Earth's lithosphere is constantly being created and destroyed at plate boundaries, driving many of the planet's most dramatic geological phenomena. Understanding the lithosphere is fundamental to fields such as geology, geophysics, and seismology, as it forms the foundation of our planet's surface and significantly influences its dynamic processes.
