Litasvið, also known as the "Lithuanian Literary Society" or "Lithuanian Literary Circle," refers to a group of intellectuals, writers, and poets who played a pivotal role in the cultural and literary revival of Lithuania during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This movement emerged as part of the broader Romantic and National Revival efforts to preserve and promote Lithuanian language, culture, and identity amid Russian imperial rule.

The origins of Litasvið can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when Lithuanian intellectuals began gathering in informal literary circles to discuss poetry, philosophy, and national identity. One of the most influential figures was Jonas Basanavičius, a physician and educator who became a central figure in the movement. He founded the Lithuanian Scientific Society (*Lietuvių mokslų draugija*) in 1883, which later evolved into a broader cultural and literary platform.

The movement emphasized the use of the Lithuanian language in literature, music, and education, countering the dominance of Russian and Polish in public life. Key figures like Vincas Kudirka, whose patriotic poem *"Tautiška giesmė"* (National Hymn) later became Lithuania’s national anthem, were central to Litasvið. The movement also fostered the creation of Lithuanian-language newspapers, schools, and cultural associations, helping to strengthen national consciousness.

Litasvið’s influence extended beyond literature, contributing to political movements that sought Lithuanian independence. After World War I and the restoration of Lithuania’s statehood in 1918, many of its ideals were institutionalized in the new republic’s cultural and educational policies.
