Lipidikerros, often translated as lipid layer or lipid bilayer, is a fundamental structure in biology. It forms the basic fabric of all cell membranes, including the plasma membrane that encloses a cell and the membranes surrounding internal organelles like the nucleus and mitochondria. This bilayer is composed primarily of amphipathic phospholipid molecules. Amphipathic means these molecules have both a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head and a hydrophobic (water-repelling) tail.

In an aqueous environment, these phospholipids spontaneously arrange themselves into a bilayer. The hydrophilic heads face outwards, interacting with the water inside and outside the cell, while the hydrophobic tails face inwards, away from the water, forming a non-polar interior. This arrangement creates a stable barrier that separates the cell's internal environment from its external surroundings. This barrier is selectively permeable, meaning it allows certain molecules to pass through while restricting others, a crucial property for cellular function. Embedded within or associated with this lipid bilayer are various proteins that perform a multitude of tasks, such as transporting substances across the membrane, receiving signals, and catalyzing reactions. The fluidity of the lipid bilayer, due to the movement of its constituent phospholipid molecules, is also essential for many of these protein functions and for the overall dynamic nature of cell membranes.
