Lihassäie is the Finnish term for a muscle fiber. Muscle fibers are the basic cellular units of skeletal muscle tissue. They are long, multinucleated cells that are responsible for generating the force required for movement. Each muscle fiber is a single cell, but it is exceptionally long, sometimes spanning the entire length of a muscle.

These fibers are bundled together to form muscles. Within each muscle fiber are thousands of smaller structures called myofibrils. Myofibrils are composed of repeating units called sarcomeres, which contain the contractile proteins actin and myosin. The sliding of actin and myosin filaments past each other within the sarcomeres is the mechanism by which muscle fibers shorten and produce force.

Muscle fibers can be broadly classified into different types based on their contractile speed and metabolic properties. Fast-twitch fibers (tyyppi II) contract quickly and are used for rapid, powerful movements, but they fatigue easily. Slow-twitch fibers (tyyppi I) contract more slowly but are more resistant to fatigue, making them ideal for endurance activities. The proportion of each fiber type varies among individuals and can be influenced by training. Lihassäie are essential for all voluntary movements, from walking and running to fine motor skills.
