Legénységnek, also referred to as the Hungarian Military Service Act, is a comprehensive law governing the organization, training, and deployment of the Hungarian Armed Forces. Enacted in 1996, the law outlines the principles and requirements for military service in Hungary.

According to the law, male Hungarian citizens are obliged to perform military service between the ages of 18 and 35. The duration of service varies depending on the individual's occupation, education, and physical fitness. Conscripts typically serve for 9-12 months, while volunteers can enlist for shorter or longer periods.

The law also establishes the National Public Commission, which is responsible for the recruitment and enlistment of new personnel. The commission conducts physical and medical examinations, as well as background checks on potential recruits. Those deemed unfit for service are exempt from military obligations.

Legénységnek also addresses the rights and responsibilities of military personnel, including their entitlement to education and training benefits, as well as healthcare and social services. The law also outlines the procedures for transferring between branches of service, promotion, and discharge.

Changes to the law in 2003 introduced a professional military component, allowing volunteers to enlist for longer periods or full-time service. This change effectively doubled the size of the Hungarian Army, with many professionally-enlisted soldiers opting for careers in the military. Legénységnek remains an essential component of Hungary's national defense, providing a framework for the organization and deployment of the country's armed forces.
