Lapsivesi, also known as amniotic fluid, is a clear, yellowish fluid that surrounds a fetus during pregnancy. It is contained within the amniotic sac, which is also called the membranes. Lapsivesi plays a crucial role in fetal development and well-being.

The primary functions of lapsivesi include protecting the fetus from external injury by cushioning it against bumps and movements, maintaining a constant temperature for the fetus, preventing the umbilical cord from being compressed, and allowing the fetus to move freely, which is essential for proper muscle and bone development. It also prevents the amnion from sticking to the embryo, which would cause serious developmental abnormalities.

Lapsivesi is produced early in pregnancy and is initially composed of water and electrolytes. As pregnancy progresses, fetal urine becomes a significant component of the fluid. The fetus swallows lapsivesi, which helps develop its digestive system, and also excretes it as urine, contributing to the fluid's turnover.

The volume of lapsivesi typically increases throughout pregnancy, reaching its peak around 34-36 weeks, and then gradually decreases before labor. The amount and characteristics of lapsivesi can provide important clues about the health of the fetus. Deviations in volume, such as too little (oligohydramnios) or too much (polyhydramnios), can indicate potential complications or fetal abnormalities. The color and smell of the fluid, especially when the amniotic sac ruptures before or during labor, can also be assessed for signs of fetal distress or infection.
