A laminärflödesbås, also known as a laminar flow cabinet or biosafety cabinet (though the terms are not always interchangeable), is a work enclosure that creates a sterile environment for sensitive work. It achieves this by using a fan to draw air through a series of filters, typically HEPA filters, and then expelling it in a unidirectional, non-turbulent "laminar" flow across the work surface. This constant flow of filtered air prevents airborne contaminants from entering the cabinet and also protects the user from potentially harmful aerosols generated within the cabinet.

There are several types of laminärflödesbås, primarily distinguished by their containment capabilities and the direction of airflow. Class I cabinets offer personnel protection but minimal product protection, as air is drawn inwards and exhausted without HEPA filtration of the exhaust. Class II cabinets provide both personnel and product protection, with HEPA-filtered air recirculating within the cabinet and a portion being exhausted, also through a HEPA filter. Class III cabinets offer the highest level of protection for both personnel and the environment, with a fully enclosed, gas-tight design and double HEPA filtration of both incoming and exhausted air.

Laminärflödesbås are widely used in laboratories, cleanrooms, and manufacturing settings where sterile conditions are critical. Applications include cell culture, microbiology, pharmaceutical compounding, and microelectronics manufacturing. The specific type of cabinet chosen depends on the nature of the work being performed and the level of risk involved. Proper operation and maintenance, including regular filter checks and certification, are essential to ensure the continued effectiveness of the laminärflödesbås.
