lakustrinen

Lakustrinen is an adjective used in Finnish (and related Nordic usage) to describe things related to lakes. In English, the corresponding term is lacustrine.

In geology and limnology, lacustrine denotes environments, processes, and deposits associated with standing freshwater bodies. Lacustrine sediments are typically fine-grained (clays, silts, and organic-rich mud) due to low-energy conditions, though larger deltas and shoreface zones may occur around lake margins. Varves—annual layers of sediment—are a well-known lacustrine feature in cold regions. Lacustrine deposits record information on lake level fluctuations, climate change, and catchment history through pollen, diatoms, and isotopic data.

Distinctions: lacustrine contrasts with marine, palustrine (marshes), and fluvial (rivers) environments. In stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental studies, lacustrine sequences help reconstruct past hydrology and climate, as well as human use of lake shores.
