Lakialoitetta refers to a legislative initiative in Finland that allows citizens to propose new laws or amendments to existing ones. This mechanism is a cornerstone of Finnish direct democracy, empowering individuals and groups to influence the legislative process.

To initiate a lakialoite, a proposal must be supported by at least 50,000 eligible voters. Once this threshold is met, the proposal is formally submitted to the Parliament of Finland. The parliamentary process then follows, where the proposal is assigned to a relevant committee for examination and debate.

The committee will review the proposal, gather expert opinions, and may hold public hearings. Following the committee's review, the proposal is presented to the full Parliament for a vote. If the Parliament approves the lakialoite, it proceeds to become law, following the usual legislative procedures.
