Ladestumist is the Estonian term for the process of deposition, referring to the settling of solid particles from a fluid or the precipitation of dissolved substances to form a solid phase. It encompasses physical settling, chemical precipitation, and biologically mediated accumulation, and it occurs in natural environments as well as in engineered systems.

In a geological and hydrological context, ladestumist describes how sediments carried by water or air settle to form layers. The rate and character of deposition depend on particle size and density, fluid velocity and energy, and the availability of transport pathways. Fine, well-sorted sediments tend to form quiet-water laminations, while coarser material deposits in higher-energy settings. Over time, deposited materials may compact and lithify, contributing to sedimentary rock sequences.

Chemical deposition occurs when dissolved substances reach supersaturation or experience changes in temperature, pressure, pH, or redox conditions that cause precipitation. Common examples include calcite and other carbonates in cave systems (speleothems), gypsum, halite, and iron oxides. Chemical deposition can occur in pore waters, on mineral surfaces, or during diagenetic processes long after initial sedimentation.

Biological deposition involves organisms mediating mineral accumulation, either through biomineralization or through living processes that trap and bind minerals. Examples include shell formation by mollusks and microbial or algal contributions to sediment composition.

Sedimentation rates and deposits serve as proxies for past environmental conditions, informing interpretations of climate history, pollution history, and watershed dynamics.
