Lämpötilavaiheissa refers to the different states or phases a substance can exist in as its temperature changes. The most common phase transitions occur at specific temperatures and are governed by the interactions between the molecules of the substance.

The primary temperature phases for most substances are solid, liquid, and gas. In the solid phase, molecules are tightly packed and vibrate in fixed positions. As temperature increases and heat is added, the molecules gain kinetic energy. At the melting point, the solid transitions into a liquid. In the liquid phase, molecules are still close together but can move past each other, giving liquids their ability to flow. Further heating increases molecular motion. At the boiling point, the liquid transforms into a gas. In the gaseous phase, molecules are far apart and move randomly at high speeds.

Beyond these common phases, some substances can exhibit other states under different temperature and pressure conditions. For instance, plasma is often considered the fourth state of matter, occurring at extremely high temperatures where atoms are ionized. Supercritical fluids exist at temperatures and pressures above their critical point, exhibiting properties of both liquids and gases.

The transitions between these temperature phases are reversible. Cooling a substance causes it to lose kinetic energy, leading to condensation from gas to liquid, and freezing from liquid to solid. The specific temperatures at which these transitions occur are characteristic properties of each substance. For example, water melts at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure. These temperature-dependent phase changes are fundamental concepts in thermodynamics and chemistry, explaining many natural phenomena and industrial processes.
